Section: Life Away From…
Blogger: Joseph Clay
I’m a huge fan of classic horror films. Since I ditched the cable I now get to enjoy them once again. For an explanation of how this came about read Rabbit Ears: Back in Style.
When I was younger I never missed a horror movie that Elvira: Mistress of the Dark was hosting on TBS.
Elvira was the hostess with the mostest that no young man could resist. She had charm, personality, along with a great sense of humor.
If Johnny Cash was the man in black, Elvira is the woman in black.
Her long flowing gown fits snugly down to her waist then flows over her hips. Her long legs adorned black sheer hose. The black high heels covering her feet completed the ensemble.
Her long coal-black cascading hair flowing over her shoulders framed a beautiful face. That face brought comfort to ones soul during breaks from the horror feature. Elvira had two assets that made you forget about the safe distance to watch television from to keep from burning your retinas.
Those assets were a huge pair of…eyes. Elvira’s eyes were mysterious and sensuous. Those eyes, along with the movie kept me coming back week after week.
Back to now!
While surfing through my free channels the other day, I saw a commercial for Svengoolie. Who and/or what is Svengoolie.
Svengoolie is the male equivalent of Elvira. Every Saturday night on Me TV he hosts a classic horror movie from his dungeon.
The first thing I noticed about Svengoolie, he is no Elvira although he does have big eyes.
The design of Svengoolie’s dungeon is excellent. It’s filled with scientific gadgets, gargoyles and Svengoolie’s extravagant coffin along with other decorations to give it charm.
The shows introduction is perfect. After the lead in Svengoolie opens the top section of his coffin and introduces the film.
Svengoolie is most entertaining while informative. The show is filled with funny one liners, games for the viewers, along with music and special guests on occasion.
After a commercial break things get hilarious as Svengoolie inserts himself into the feature for a short comic bit.
Berwyn the sidekick of Svengoolie is a rubber chicken that you can always count on to provide laughs as he spews out one liners throughout the show. Berwyn and Svengoolie have a segment where they share the screen together.
The show always ends with the doorbell ringing interrupting Svengoolie’s closing. The closing comic bit ends with Svengoolie receiving his shield. Back in his coffin Svengoolie defends himself from the onslaught of flying rubber chickens as he closes the show with more zingers and one liners before pulling the coffin lid closed.
There is a ton I like about Svengoolie. The one thing that stands above the rest is the information he passes along during the show. Svengoolie gives the background of the classic horror film that is being shown along with the cast members of the flick.
If you are like me and love the classic horror movies I suggest you too watch Svengoolie. I rank him right up there with Elvira as a formidable host for these great horror movies.
Below are the movies I have seen so far on Svengoolie.
- The Werewolf of London
- The Mole People
- Man-Made Monster
- Night Walker
- Leech Woman
- The Medusa Against the Son of Hercules
- The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
- Munster Go Home
- Son of Frankenstein
- The Wolf Man
- House of Frankenstein
- House of Horrors
I have enjoyed every one of the above horror films. Watch for my reviews of these movies and more here on the blog.
Till then may your nightmares wake you covered in sweat and screaming.
