You know Spring is in the air when two weeks after the Super Bowl the gentlemen and women of NASCAR start their engines.

Sunny Daytona Beach, Florida came alive as the engines began to roar and the cars began crashing.

We are two weeks in to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Each week brought us a different winner, neither driver or team I root for. May all time favorite #48 Jimmy Johnson. My other favorite drivers, Dale Jr and Danica no longer drive so this year I decided to pick a another driver to cheer for. My hope is both don’t crash in the same race. I decided to go with #9 Chase Elliot.

Why Chase?

Well I’m from Georgia he’s from Georgia. I was a huge fan of his dads, Wild Bill from Dawsonville (Bill Elliot) and he took Jr’s place.

The race as always was riddled with wrecks. Only 16 of the 40 cars that started the race were still on track when overtime got underway. Only 3 of them had not been involved in some kind of accident.

Denny Hamlin won the race under NASCAR overtime rules.

I didn’t like it because my guys lost but was pleased that by Hamlin wining it kept his teammate Kyle Busch from doing so. I don’t like either Bush. Kyle is win-less at Daytona in 14 attempts.

I think it was fitting that someone, other than Kyle, won on the day when Joe Gibbs Racing was paying tribute to team co-founder J.D. Gibbs, who passed away before the season started. J.D. Gibbs had recruited Denny Hamlin to the organization, making the win even more powerful for the No. 11 driver. Hamlin was quoted after the victory saying.

“We’re desperately going to miss him for the rest of our lives.”

#9 Chase Elliot who started in the 18 position, finished 17 (Crashed)

Atlanta – Quick Trip 500

The second race of the season was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which is no where close to Atlanta. I was sure my guys would mike a good showing here. Congratulations to #2 Brad Keselowski on his win in Atlanta.

#48 Jimmy Johnson started in the 11 position, finished 24 (Running). Hey Jimmy lets try finishing ahead of where we started.

#9 Chase Elliot stated in the 22 position, finished 19 (Running).

Next week the series heads west for the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Since 2002 Jimmy Johnson has finished in the top ten, 9 out of 18 races. 4 of those he took the checkered flag. I suspect he will have a good showing this year.

Chase Elliot has run the Vegas track 4 times. Highest finished was third.

Till next week keep it three wide.
